Who am I?  Why am I here?  What on earth am I doing?

Let’s start here.  First, my name:  I’m Stacey.  I’m a late 30’s mother of three who has pretty much lived her entire adult life backwards.  From having children to getting married to buying a house and now pursuing my education, it seems I’ve made a habit of defying tradition. 

So that leads me to why I’m here.  The short version:  After creating a family with my husband, I decided that pursuing my education should be a priority.  Yes, AFTER having kids.  I graduated with a dual Bachelors’ of Science in Legal Studies and Accounting, with a minor in Business.  A stellar GPA and an okay LSAT score led me to where I am currently:  looking down the path of full time law school at the University of Baltimore. 

So.  What am I doing?  Well, with any lucky and a lot of dedication, I will be using the next three years of my life to obtain my Juris Doctor and ultimately pass Maryland’s Bar exam. 


Easy enough, right?  This blog is my way of showing how someone who will be almost 40 years old with three growing children at home pursues her lifelong dream.  Stay tuned, I have a feeling that this will be one heck of a ride.

So.  You're going to Law School.  Now what? The last seat deposit for UB was due by mid-June.  This marked the last real hurdle before I was completely admitted to study law this coming year as a 1L.  Shortly after this was paid, we left to go on our yearly vacation to the Happiest Place on Earth (well, one of them at least.)  During this trip, while doing a routine email and Facebook scan, I learned that schedules were posted.  There's nothing quite like trying to enjoy vacation knowing that the next few months of your life are set pretty much in stone. From Stay at Home Mom to 1L

As I've mentioned, I'm not a traditional student.  The last time I dressed up in something other than leggings or shorts was for my college graduation last year.  Even working as a long term substitute teacher, I never really shopped for or embraced dressing like an adult. My youngest and I once joked about how lawyers get to wear gorgeous pumps and fancy clothes.  That this career style would be up her alley given her love of all things fashion.  I really didn't give it a second thought, even entering law school.  Why on earth would leggings and tunics not be okay?  (Hint:  that style really isn't appropriate for a business school when you are already into your late 30's.) Fast forward to reading through my Orientation schedule and coming to a screeching halt.   Business formal required for the first evening.  Business casual is okay for the second and third evenings.    Somehow, I don't think my one singular decent...

Crickets...

So I just got an email today saying there was a comment request for this blog and I was taken aback...  Blog?  What?  Me?  Then I realized how much of a cave I've lived in for the past year.  I'm now in my second week of law school and somehow still surviving. How about some updates? First, and most important, I passed my first year of law school.  No academic probation, no failing grades, no soul crushing defeats. Second, I completed two internships this summer.  More about those in upcoming posts. Third, I was selected to serve on my school's Honor Board.  I'm just now getting involved with that... Fourth, I managed the highest grade in my research/writing class and accepted a position as a teacher's assistant.  I have the best co-TA in the entire world an am hoping to inspire a class of 1L's!
